Kerala Church shocked over nun’s murder

A 53-year-old nun from Kerala who led campaigns to defend tribal rights was shot dead yesterday in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. Sister Valsa John, who belonged to the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary, was killed during an alleged encounter near her home in the early hours of yesterday morning in Pakur district, near the city of Dumka.
According to Sister Lilly Mary, the dead nun’s congregation provincial, Sister John was working with people belonging to the Santhal tribe and was living alone. She had been protesting against mining corporations that were exploiting the tribal people of the region, she said.
The nun, who hailed from Eranakulam in Kerala, was arrested in 2007 for protesting against a coal mine on tribal land that had allegedly been acquired illegally in Jharkhand’s Pakur district. The provincial, however, said that case had been settled.
The Catholic bishops’ conference spokesman, Father Babu Joseph, said the local church will demand a thorough investigation into the tragedy by the state government. Church leaders in Kerala have expressed shock and outrage over the killing of Sister Valsa John.

The curtain raiser of the show will be aired on Easter, 24April at 9 pm Choir music had always been an integral part of evangelical worship, for the sonorous power of music to uplift the soul and instill a sense of the divine, recognized since Biblical times. So the Christian devotional song category that centres around sacred religious themes or hymns in praise of the Lord, is rooted in a tradition that stretches many centuries back into the past.
The rapturous melodies of this rich musical genre which had been confined more or less to the ears of the congregations of the churches, will now be picturised on dazzling sets and reverberate in millions of homes across the world through Deva Geetham. Deva Geetham showcases 10 of the most outstanding choirs from churches in different parts of the State, each backed up by an 8-piece orchestra. They were shortlisted from a State-wide auditions process, which had 58 choir teams competing to get into the show. Each of the 10 selected groups may have 12-15 members on stage, of which 4-5 form the core ensemble of singers while the rest provide instrumental accompaniment with basic keyboard, organ ,guitar etc. Though a group of vocalists may occupy the dais, most of the performances will be solo in nature. The rounds give full rein to the limitless variety of themes inherent in choir music, from Christmas carols, Easter specials, film songs, Psalms, the Second coming etc to performances rich episodes such as Angel dance, Candle dance, the Birth of Christ and so on. The choir will put in their unified effort in front of a jury panel consisting of eminent music director Ouseppachan, himself an erstwhile choral violinist, Father Antony Uruliannikkal Renowned Music Director [Christian Devotional Songs] and a celebrity guest from the ranks of music composers or playback singers.

ad limina visit of The Syro-Malankara Catholic Bishops.
Holy Father Addressed His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos and the Bishops of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church.
On 25 March 2011, the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI received prelates of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, who have been in Vatican for their five-yearly "ad limina" visit
"The apostolic traditions which you maintain enjoy their full spiritual fruitfulness when they are lived in union with the Church universal", said the Holy Father in his English-language remarks. "In this sense, you rightly follow in the footsteps of the Servant of God Mar Ivanios, who led your predecessors and their faithful into full communion with the Catholic Church. Like your forefathers, you too are called, within the one household of God, to continue in firm fidelity to that which has been passed down to you".
"The deposit of faith handed down from the Apostles and faithfully transmitted to our times is a precious gift from the Lord", said the Holy Father, noting that "due to its ancient roots and distinguished history, Christianity in India has long made its proper contribution to culture and society, and to its religious and spiritual expressions. It is through a determination to live the Gospel ... that those whom you serve will make a more effective contribution to the entire body of Christ and to Indian society, to the benefit of all. May your people continue to flourish by the preaching of God's word and by the promotion of a fellowship based on the love of God."
Benedict then turned to consider the challenges facing the prelates in their work, especially the shortage of parish priests. In this context he encouraged them not to lose heart because "small Christian communities have often, as you know, given outstanding witness in the history of the Church. ... It is this divine presence which must remain at the centre of your people's life, faith and witness, and which you their pastors are called to watch over so that, even if they must live far from their community, they will not live far from Christ."
"One of the ways in which you exercise your role as teachers of the faith to the Christian community", the Pope concluded his remarks to the bishops, "is through catechetical and faith formation programmes.... Since 'instruction should be based on Holy Scripture, Tradition, liturgy, and on the teaching authority and life of the Church', I am pleased to note the variety and number of programmes that you currently employ. Along with the celebration of the Sacraments, such programmes will help ensure that those in your care will always be able to give an account of the hope which is theirs in Christ".
The prelates headed by Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, the Father and Head of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, His Grace Most Rev. Thomas Mar Koorilos, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tiruvalla, Most Rev. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios, Bishop of Puttur, Most Rev, Yoohanon Mar Chrysostom, Bishop of Pathanamthitta, Most Rev.
